Lowestoffe Lodge (www.lowestoffecountrylodge.co.za)

Lowestoffe is a centrally situated Trout Lodge lying at an average altitude of approximately 1300m. Although the owners advertise dam and river fishing, I have only personally experienced the still water fishing.

The farm is home to three different lodges, each situated relatively near to specific waters. The lodges are very cosy and almost inviting. Lowestoffe is ideal for a family getaway, as there is a tennis court, trout fishing, horse riding, mountain passes and hiking, amongst other things to keep everyone busy.

The best sized fish have been known to come from the "Top Dam" and from the Emerald green dam behind "Walnut Lodge".

The bottom dam, below the main farmhouse and "Trout Lodge"is good for float tubing and has also been home to some decent fish.

Your hosts are Neil Evans and Robyn Conroy, who are extremely friendly and very accommodating. Call Robyn or Neil on (045) 843-1716, e-mail lowestof@intekom.co.za or visit www.lowestoffecountrylodge.co.za

Nearby, the family can enjoy the man-made warmth of the town of Hogsback, as well as some upmarket meals and spa-type treatments. Hogsback is approximately 20km from Lowestoffe, by dust road. Bakkies and 4x4's are advisable.

Coolin Trout Lodge

Coolin Trout Lodge is situated approximately 10km from Hogsback via dust road, and is characterised by the quiet secluded loft-styled lodges.

Your hosts are Ron and Elizabeth Kidson, who are also extremely flexible and accommodating and love the company of other families.

The farm is currently about to undergo some major "surgery", but remains a great getaway in the meantime. The fishing at Coolin is reputed to be good, but I have not spent enough time to test this.

The atmosphere and accommodation at Coolin is what draws me back there at least once a year.

Coolin's water lies at approximately 1400m above sea-level and the fish apparently spawn naturally every year. From time to time the stock is boosted with some external fry etc.

The dam at Coolin has an approximate diameter of 100m, and is great for early morning and late evening fishing as it is no more than 100m away from all three lodges.

Rhodes (General Bell, Sterkspruit, Bokspruit and Kraai Rivers)

Rhodes Village seems to have been left behind by society in general, but is actually one of the most awesome getaways one can experience, if one enjoys peace and tranquility, and especially for trout fisherpeople.
